A361 CLASS NOTES

Educational psychology has demonstrated that taking your own notes is important in the learning process. If something is wriiten down, it has to be processed in the mind, further reinforcing learning. Also, written notes are in your own thinking style, and are your record for review and further learning. This will enhance making the learning your own, that you will take with you and continue developing in life.

I am making the notes that I use to teach Applied Social Change as another resource for you. However, you are expected to make you own notes in class. My notes are only in outline form, and are useful for two purposes:

• To help prepare for the specific contents of class. Educational psychology has demonstrated that if you have have reviewed the ideas before you come to class, you are more alert to understanding the contents and discussions in class and you are further along in building your own understandings in ways that are relevant to you.
• To review after class. Educational psychology has demonstrated that reviewing the contents after each class builds the learning process in small and very effective steps. Compare your in-class notes with mine. This will help you identify how well you are tuning in to the class discussions. Fill your own notes with the ideas included in my notes. This will help clarify, reinforce, and make more comprehensive and relevant your own understandings.
